PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES
SUMMARY OF CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
Approximately 90% of the time I spend seeing patients at my private practice, located on the second floor of
the Synergy Medical Fitness Center at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. I and my fellows and associate see approximately 30 patients per day, ranging from children and young athletes to senior citizens. Our goal is to diagnose and fix complex orthopedic and neurological problems including those that do not fit neatly into one particular specialty or have a straightforward solution. We perform nerve conduction studies and electromyography, musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound and a variety of image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic injections and interventions.

We educate patients using anatomical models and research ways to solve their problems with exercise or changes in loading patterns, regenerative injections or ultra-minimally invasive surgery. I see patients and do procedures at Queen of the Valley Medical Center and am on staff at St. Helena Hospital. At the Wellness Center, I oversee the clinical staff and provide guidance to Synergy Medical Fitness Center and the Institute for Integrative Health, through which we have organized a speaker series.

SUMMARY OF TEACHING HOURS:
Our practice has sponsored one AAPMR (and formerly PASSOR) approved musculoskeletal fellow from 2004 to 2009 and two since 2009. The fellowship emphasis is on interventional spine, sports medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasound, electrodiagnosis and regenerative medicine. The fellowship was approve under the temporary ACGME criteria for sports medicine through 2013. The six fellows who have taken the examination have had a 100% pass rate. In the summers of 2009 and 2010, our practice sponsored a UC Davis premedical student. Visiting faculty, fellows, residents and medical students have spent from one day to one month at our clinic. Formal teaching, such as at the AIUM-Mayo Clinic, AANEM, AAPMR, and AAPM courses, has averaged 50-70 hours per year, not including preparation time. Informal teaching, including direct supervision of fellows, pre-medical and medical students and visiting faculty, has averaged approximately 3 hours per day, 4 days per week, 45 weeks per year, or approximately 540 hours per year.

RESEARCH PROGRAM
We are currently engaged in the following research:
1) Ultra-minimally invasive surgery using ultrasound guidance.
2) Regenerative techniques for intervertebral discs, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
3) Mathematical modeling in neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders (nerve and muscle
anatomy and physiology, entrapment syndromes, muscular dystrophy, enthesopathies).
4) Rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular disorders in adults and children.
